Population at every census from 1841, including 1901, 1911 and the 1926 census of the Irish Free State.
The recovery ratio is simple arithmetic on two published counts: today's population as a percentage of the population at an earlier census.
Recovery against the selected benchmark
100% means the area has exactly the population it had at the census you chose to compare with. Below 100% means it has not got back to that level.

What this does not show
- County boundaries have changed little over this period, but the areas inside them have changed. This table has nothing below county level.
- Figures up to 1911 cover the counties of the whole island, as they were then.
- A recovery ratio describes population only. It says nothing about prosperity, services or quality of life.
