Ask ATLAS
Ask about one named area, or one published measure. ATLAS reads your question using keywords, and an AI reader where one is available, and turns it into a fixed query. It checks the query is one it can answer, works out the answer in code, and shows how it read your question. If a place is unclear, or you ask it to rank places, it asks you to be more specific instead of guessing.
The AI never sees a figure and never writes an answer. No number on this page is written by a language model.

What Ask can answer
How this differs from a chatbot
- Your question is turned into a small, fixed query, and you are always shown it.
- Ordinary code runs the query over the same data the rest of ATLAS uses. A language model never works out a figure and never chooses an answer.
- If the question does not match anything in the data, ATLAS says so and lists what it can answer. It does not answer a nearby question instead.
- Every result shows its source, and the kind of area the figures are actually published for.
What this does not show
- Ask reads questions by keywords and, when available, with an AI reader. Either can misread a question. Both go through the same check: if a place is unclear, or the figures are not published for that kind of area, Ask asks you to be more specific rather than list extreme values. Check the place, measure and source shown beside every answer.
- It answers only from the fields listed above. Asked anything else, it declines and says so rather than answering a nearby question it can handle.
- It cannot answer "why". It looks up published counts and rates. It shows no cause, and two measures moving together is not evidence that one drives the other.
- The answers are measurements, not assessments. They do not establish need, service capacity, availability, access or eligibility for anywhere they describe.
- Where the AI reader is available, the words you type are sent to the model provider and recorded in this site’s server log. Your address is not recorded: a scrambled form of it is kept for one hour, only to limit how many questions one address can ask. Nothing you type is published, and no figure on this page comes from what anyone has asked before.
- Each result is for the kind of area its source publishes. A county figure is one measurement for the whole county, not a figure for any local area inside it.
